John MacWilliams

John MacWilliams is Senior Advisor to the Secretary of Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy.  In this role he advises the Secretary on Energy Finance and Special Projects.  Prior to DOE, he was a partner of the Tremont Group, LLC, a private investment firm based in Wellesley, Massachusetts that was formed in 2003. Prior to Tremont, he was a founding partner in 1993 of the Beacon Group, a private investment firm located in New York, which was acquired by JPMorgan Chase in 2000. He was also partner and cohead of the Beacon Group Energy Funds, a portfolio of more than 30 global private equity investments throughout the energy industry, ranging from traditional (oil and gas, coal mining, petrochemicals, pipelines), to early-stage venture (micro-turbines, flywheels, power technology, fuel cells, environmental controls). Prior to the formation of the Beacon Group, MacWilliams was with Goldman Sachs, where he was head of Goldman Sachs' international structured finance group based in London. Prior to joining Goldman Sachs, he was an attorney at Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York.

MacWilliams has been a member of the board of directors of the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, SmartSynch, Inc., and the Massachusetts Mentoring Partnership, as well as Alliance Resource Partners, LP; Compagnie Generale de Geophysique; Longhorn Partners Pipeline, LP; and Soft Switching Technologies, Inc.; and of the alumni council of Phillips Academy Andover. He holds a B.A. from Stanford University, an M.S. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.
